We received brought into our home a new puppy (American Bulldog), only three months old now (we have had her one month). My 13 year old deaf and partly blind shi tzu is having challenges with Maggy (Amercian bulldog). Both are females. We recently have been crating Maggy all the time around the shi tzu (following Leerburg suggestions) but when she is out, my 13 year old is very scared of her - tail down, she runs away, and now the bulldog is about 2x the size of the shi tzu already and has boundless energy jumping around. I am concerned because the puppy seems to get jealous when I show attention to my shitzu and will bark, and even after pounce on the shitzu. Sometimes the puppy will try to engage my shitzu as well (I think it's play) but my shitzu is terrified. My shitzu is deaf too, so she doesn't hear when the puppy comes up on her. Any suggestions from those who have had integration challenges and have been successful? I worry as that as the puppy gets older, she will attach my little senior. The puppy (American Bulldog) is my husband's dog and the shi tzu is mine, but I have to be a secondary caregiver to the Bulldog just because my husband isn't always around. Any suggestions/words of wisdom are very much appreciated.
Thank you
JMO but a 13yr old, deaf, partly blind shi tzu has earned the right to be left alone. I think they should be kept separated before you loose the the old gal. She's to old to have to go through all the stress while the pup learns manners. Especially since she's afraid to correct the AB herself. Again, JMO!
Thanks for the suggestion on crating. We have been doing this and Maggy's interaction with the senior is very limited and always supervised. My worry is that as the American Bulldog gets old, she may still be aggressive (if that is what I'm seeing, or at three months old is this just puppy play?) with the senior and too much for her - or worse attack her! Any suggestions from American Bulldog owners with experience on their temperment? Thanks again for insights!
