My poor pup got her two toes broken recently. I was wondering if any of you could help me with this delimma. She went to the vet who said that since she also has an unhealed wound from the accident, they will not be able to cast it, they recommended putting on splints AFTER her wound healed. I have soaked her paw in epson salt everyday, put neosporan (sp?) on it before I wrap it in. She has been great in allowing me to work on her paw, and has done wonderful in not taking off her bandages.
I think I am doing all I can do. Keeping her crated for the next month, letting her out to use the bathroom and for some social time with us. She is 14 weeks old (A Hooooorrbile time to have this happen to her.) and needs to be exposed to others as much as possible since she has shown shyness to others people and animals.
I feel it is important for her to socialize everyday to get her emotions where I want them, yet the Doc. says not to move her.
Do you think that one month of crating will have a bad impact on her social health?
Please keep in mind, I stay at home with 5 boys. So this means that I do have time to invest in her, and despritely want to do right by her.
Thanks so much!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Tammy Haga "Owner in training"
Tammy- sorry about your poor girl. It is a horrible time to have this happen to her. Even though you cant take her out, people can come over. I would still socialize her, but have the poeple and well behaved calm dogs come to your house. That way she meets new people at least.
Tammy, try antibiotic powder instead of Neosporin. When I was in the scuba diving business, this was the fastest way to get open wounds to heal when you were wet all the time. Keeping wounds dry and allowing the oxygen to get to it will allow quicker healing time.
Also add Vit C powder to food. A great healer of bones and skin injuries. Toes heal quick and nothing is stopping you from keeping her socialized, just limit the activity.
Sorry to hear about your pup, Good Luck and wishing a speedy recovery.
I think I remember seeing nitrofurzone in powder form in the KV vet supply catalogue. I have also found it in feed stores. good luck and sorry about your pups toes.
