Weren't there warnings about those Wal Mart crates and dogs getting stuck between the bars? Remember, you get what you pay for so it wouldn't hurt to invest in quality crates.
"Cesar's Way" was one recommended book, I would also recommend "The Dog Listener" by Jan Fennell. That particular book shouldn't be followed to a "T" IMO but it has great insight and suggestions for reclaiming the alpha position. The more you read, the broader your knowledge base on which to draw on. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
WalMart sells many different kinds of crates...dogs have gotten stuck in, broken teeth on, twisted paws in all kinds of crates from all kinds of manufacturers. Make sure the crate's the right size for the dog, and that will eliminate some chances of stuck paws, etc. Paying more doesn't always mean your dog won't find a way to get hurt.

....Just an add, since the dogs aren't used to crates, make sure they get lots of exercise before getting crated so they'll settle in quicker and begin by associating the crate with good things, such as food/special treats only given while in the crate.
What she said! A power walk - a long one - before the first crate experience for dogs not used to it is a big important point, IMO!
