First time post. I am a handler of a three year old Vizsla. He is a passive Narcotics Detector. We are still new to the game only been together since Jan. I am looking for assistance with trying to get him to show me where the Narcotics are located. Right now he gets scent and gives an alert and a lot of times he is still two foot away from the aid. I have seen other dogs that you can tell "show me" and they put there nose right to the aid. Any advice is welcomed.

You have what we call (I know there are many names for it) a "fringe" problem. Meaning the dog, once he detects odor, works it to a point, then responds, rather than going to the source. Fringing usually starts because the dog has been rewarded for it, rather than making them work to source. Usually I see this because the handler is training too often, knowing where the drugs are, which makes it easy for them to give the reward once the dogs in the general vicinity. Explain to your helper what your goal is. Have them plant the drug, if the dog responds off source, or fringes the odor, have the helper then tell you where it is, and you withhold the reward until the dog works to it, Once the dog goes to source, responds, then give the reward.
