Hi...
Just wanted to relay my experience I had today with the American Temperament Testing. My boy is just a family dog and I'm starting to get involved in obedience...and I just thought doing the temperament test would be fun, and help me learn a lot about my dog. When I got there, I realized all of the other dogs were titled with various titles and that the local kennel club members didn't seem to think too much of me and my dog (as we hadn't done anything too impressive). People were nervously talking about their dog's training and how it might help them in the test. i thought it was strange...how do you train your dog's temperament? it's something he's born with....
Anyhow, so I did the test and my dog did very well. Was extremely alert and attentive to everything, but not timid. We passed the test, but there were two things he did that I was concerned about. First, he was not very interested in the neutral stranger trying to pet him, and he flinched a little (although held his ground) when the aggressive stranger came at him. But the tester (president of the society) seemed very knowledgeable, and informed me that GSDs are expected to be aloof to strangers, and that his flinch at the threatening stranger was acceptable, as he was still very young.
Anyhow, overall, it seemed like a good way to learn about your dog in comparison to other dogs, and other dogs from your breed. Also, was interesting to see some of those "titled" dogs fail and also to see how all of the kennel club members changed towards me after we passed!
