I saw the Saltwater and beach question and it made me interested about the freshwater and lake.
I want to take my dog out swimmiing so that she can learn how to and to make her stronger (swimming is a good workout and it's fun).
I was wandering if I should worry about the natural freshwater at lakes and riviers, are there parasites that dogs aren't used too, can dogs get the "squirts" from freshwater swimming also?
How should I intoduce my pup to a lake during swimming season because it's spring time and I know there are going to be a bunch of people there?
Any good toys to take to the lake.
Oh, and doggie life jackets! Any good links where I can find some! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
The only thing I have noticed with freshwater is that some dogs tend to swallow a lot of water when they swim with a toy and have to be let out frequently afterwards. Some dogs do this, some don't.
It is always easier to initiate a dog that hasn't been swimming with a known swimmer for competition. Most don't want to miss out on the other dog's fun.
I think the doggie lifejackets have very limited use. If you are boating way out where the dog may not be able to swim to shore or if in a situation where there is reduced bouyancy (i.e. whitewater) then maybe I might put one on my dog, but other than that I can't see the use.
I swim my dogs in fresh water, salt water , chlorine water (pool) and every muddy creak they can find. Have never had a problem with parasites. BUT..I feed raw, do mininmal to no vaccines and thus beleive that they have a great immune system that can ward off any potential problems. (and these guys do swim in lakes that are known to produce the 'itch' in humans.
As far as life jackets, I agree with Deanna. They can actually be quite a hindrance and some dogs learn to rely on them and don't learn to really swim/get strong at it etc.
Years ago I took my one dog to an indoor pool for therapy. She didnt' really enjoy it (only dog of mine that doesn't love water!) We used a life jacket initially but this was WAY worse than not using it. SHe would actually panic in the life jacket. Without the jacket was easier for her and more confortable.
If I was doing a lot of boating and was going to be far from shore then I would perhaps use one. BUT, I would first make sure the dog was used to swimming with it ON!
My dogs don't like baths much either <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> But they love to swim <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> in the river.
Keep a long line on your pup just in case until it is old enough & strong enough to handle the water & any slight current, or slipping into deeper water than planned etc. Lake water seeems to stay at one level underfoot for a bit & then tends to often just drop off to a deeper level...at least the ones that I have been in do. Better to be safe.
