My momma toy fox terrier was just killed by a car and I guess I'm not sure what to do now. One of the pups is very runty. How can I help these guys out? Are they ready for dog food, do I need to get a milk supplement? Any advise apperciated.
That is tragic! So sorry to hear about the loss of your 'mom'. 5 wks. is plenty old enough to wean them and they should be fine. In fact, by now, they should have been lapping up some water, goat's milk etc.
If you can get some raw goat's milk that would be the 'best' choice as it has enzymes to break down the milk for the pups to digest etc. If you have not started weaning them then you can mix goat's milk with baby pablum. Once they are eating this fine, then you can start to add other food. If you are feeding kibble, I *think* most put it in a blender dry to break it down and then soak it in formula/milk/water to make it mushy and easy to digest. I feed raw so it is easier.
Others should be able to help. Have the pups been on anything besides mom's milk?
The pups have been eating some moistend for about three days now, but the mom was just killed this evening. I just don't know what to do. Sprint was a good mom and always with the pups so I know they were still nursing alot. I dont know what I'll do with out her.
Where can I get goats milk? Or any other type of milk, Im sure the little one still needs something she's not been lapping water like the others. She's about three times smaller than the others. Any info welcome.
You might want to have the small one checked by your vet. If it's that much smaller than the others, I would suspect a birth defect of some kind; maybe heart (?). If you can't get goat's milk, you might pick up some evaporated powdered milk and mix with warm water/soak their kibble in it. Sorry to hear about your mama-dog.

And here are some step-by-step details about orphaned pups' care:
5 week old puppies are plenty old enough to be weaned completely - they don't need any milk. If they won't eat kibble (soaked in water until it is softened) then mix a little goat's milk in with it just until they are eating. But they don't "need" milk, in fact at their age they could have loose stool/diarrhea due to milk - which can cause dehydration, which can be dangerous to puppies. So, soak some puppy kibble in water until it's soft, and give it to them three times/day. They should be fine. Sorry about the loss of the mom but good thing they were old enough to be weaned when it happened.
