But that's me, with a high drive GSD that has never and will never bite anyone who accidentally comes in my yard. And I KNOW this because of all the training and socialization we've done in clinics/seminars/classes. I relied and trusted professionals and it worked well for us.
Jen-I know you have a working line dog but I am sssuming that the breeder steered you to a different pup for agility and your lifestyle then she would of for someone looking for personal protection.
I have 2 high drive working line dogs. Woe to the person that wanders into my yard and proceeded to act in a suspicious manner.
My dogs are very well socialized. They go to work with me. They also attend classes/training/workshops.
Lordy be, 2 out of 3 dogs will escort any guest, including my mother, to the powder room and wait for her by the door. Haven't had a toilet stolen yet!
Betty, would your dog bite two kids who came in the yard? Think that's the difference for me. You mentioned

and I also think my dogs would react differently to that. But never to kids just wandering thru. This I know. They may scare the kids by running up to them, but would never be 'attacking' to bite.
And though my GSD may not have been the top Sch3 dog ever, she could have done it and done well. She has crazy drive, nothing bothers her, and she's always up for a challenge (smart as the dickens also). She's from Sch background, not purely Protection, so I know that is different.

Jenn - a serious question here, since you didn't answer my previous question.
This may sound totally heartless, but why would I care if my dog bite a child if they *broke* into my backyard? They're intruders, and I expect my dog to protect my property in a legal manner. The kids have broken the law to invade my yard - they don't belong there and I've taken extensive steps to keep them out.
If someone's stupid kids took the time to climb over my high and well-marked fence to invade my property, it's the parents fault for not supervising them. I have a legal and moral right to privacy and I don't want anyone in my yard that isn't invited, period.

I worded my post wrong, it's been a stressful day. If somone wandered into my fenced in area, yes, I could see them being bit. Nobody has ever tested my trio so I really can't say what would happen.
My point was that out of the same litter we would want different pups. Both drivey, both smart, but still two very differnt pups.
But I just noticed that this post was under general conversation and not Personal Protection so it's probably a mute point.
Betty, I like how you noted that no one has ever really tested your trio, so you honestly do not know how they would react. This is excellent insight, IMO, of dog (animal) behavior.
I used to say my dogs would never attack, that I just knew they wouldn't because I knew them so well, that I had dogs for 15 years, yadda...
However, when I had an actual human child, I did come to realize how ridiculous it sounded for me to say the 85 lb, high prey drive GSD would *never* attack.
Honestly, I do not believe my dog would attack, or even bite for that matter. But I do not know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that he won't.
Even the best trained dog? Is it possible to fully trust, no holds barred, that the animal will never bite or attack outside command?
Michele,
You brought up some very good points!
( and I've tested one of Betty's dogs enough to know that it would bite in most situations, even at it's young age - and Betty takes precautions to prevent an unwanted bite. )
You can always provoke a dog to bite if you pressure it enough, so even the best trained dog could bite if placed in the worst situation. Even a Registered Therapy Dog can be made to bite if you put it into a brutal fight or flight situation and totally remove the option for escape.
The people that say that their dog would *never* bite are fooling themselves - hope they enjoy the view from their rose colored glasses......
