I agree with Cindy about being leery regarding the use of medication with long half lifes in canines.
If an animal has a adverse reaction to a drug, this reaction can occur over a very long period with a drug that is meant to have a body effect for 6 months.
Our animals undergo what is called " a compression of life span" by Vets. This simply means that due to their shorter life spans, they often develop symptoms of illness much more quickly than humans do. On one of the boards that was linked to Cindy's article, an owner just could not believe that her dog could die of lung cancer in a two month period. Well, a disease that kills humans in 2 years can easily take just 2 months to kill a canine.( this owner was blaming the heartworm treatment, in this case I think they were wrong ) So you can see just how bad an adverse reaction can be in a canine with a long acting medication.
