I know pit bulls are slow to mature, hence my question. Is having a pups (4 mo) behavior assessed still helpful before starting a training program? I always think of this as an important starting point.....thoughts or guidance? And NOOOOO it's not my puppy....just a question from someone trying to get off to a good start.
Valerie, since no one is jumping on this one, I'll give it a whirl. IME, pits are very slow to mature. Having said that, I still would assess where the dog is *now* and training accordingly. It's better to get a good foundation early on with a dog that is prone to a strong will. Work for a while, and reassess. What's the harm in assessing every few months or so? Mine didn't really mature mentally until he was about 3-4. Seriously. He was like a DDR pitbull.
Thanks Jenni. From the sound of it the pup is pretty soft, he takes a while to "get over" being corrected, but what the heck do I know I think your idea is a good one, looks like a slight tug on a nylon collar does better for the pup than a jerk on the prong. I never knew these dogs could be so sensitive.....
