Being a former owner of a German Shepherd with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI - aka Pancreatic Acinar Atrophy or PAA), it was recently brought to my attention that a database is being formed for dogs with the condition. EPI is believed to be an autosomal recessive trait and researchers at Texas A&M are attempting to identify genetic markers for the disease.
The development of a database for GSDs with EPI could prove to be very helpful in reducing its prevalence in the breed. Of course, this assumes breeders will research and avoid breeding dogs who are EPI+ or have produced EPI+ pups.
If you have a German Shepherd with EPI (or are a breeder whose dogs have produced EPI+ pups), please consider visiting this website and submitting your dogs' information.
