ever since summer has come my dogs have had flies buzzing around them all the time, they have taken off the hair on the tips of there ears i have been using some skip flea spray that says it works for flies but it dosen't do any thing but make their skin oily I was just trying to find out if this is a common problem and what you guys use that will hep
(1) make sure you are religious about poop scooping; I have found not problems with no poop as that is where the biting flies like to lay their eggs.
(2) I have used pastes intended for horses for this in the past with good success -- but then, you have to watch as they can also go for the nose.
(3) The flies will also bite on the legs and other parts of the body - you just notice it more on the ears...and I can vouch for the fact that their bit is quite painful.
Depending on what type of 'biting' flies, the poop may not be an issue.
Here in Maine you can be eaten alive in moments between the blackflies and the mosquitos and guess what... neither are poop oriented.
For inside the ears I usually buy the wipe on fly repellents for humans and use sparingly. my dogs are inside dogs, so they usually only get that done on a day we go to training and are going to be out for several hours. The paste that Nancy is speaking of is called SWAT for horses and can be found in most feed stores and works well on the smaller biting fly types. It comes in Pepto pink and now a new clear color.
