This is actually a silly question, but I DO Not recall if my dog used to have eyelashes on the bottom of his eye! He has them on the top. Today I was looking at him and he looked different to me.
I thought it was in the eyes and upon close inspection, close, farther back and close again, I started psyching myself out. DID HE USED TO HAVE EYELASHES on the bottom? Or were they always smooth?
Can ya'll please help me out on this one? Do your dogs have eyelashes on top and bottom or just on top? Does this vary dog to dog?
Michelle, your dog may be developing or have already developed "entropion" which is a condition whereby the lower or upper lid curls in and the eyelashes rest against the eyeball. With constant blinking, the eyelashes can become shorter or non-existent.
My Wheaten terrier had entropion whereby eventually her cornea become ulcerated. I didn't know that canine opthalmologists existed, but they do. I located one and had my dog's entropion remedied through plastic surgery. $1,600.
Now my dog is fine except the opening of the entropion eye is slightly smaller than the eye not operated on.
Do an Internet search for "canine entropion" to learn all about this condition.
Just checked our GSDs eyes. The male has really short eyelashes-top and bottom. Female's are longer top-bottom. I had a Chow that had entropion eyelids. He had to have both eyes operated on The surgery stopped the eye infections that initially caused us to find out about this condition.
I take back the embarrassment part of my initial post.
I have read about entropion eyelids in the past and know of the condition. However, did not know the condition is related to the absence of eyelashes.
I will check into this. The lower lid and/or eyes do not appear to have any problems (ie: curling, lashes going in, etc.) and the dog doesn't appear to blink excessively.
Are symptoms of entropion virtually non-existant until the disease has progressed? What are symptoms? Causes?
I searched entropion on this site. The search only offered this thread. Will branch out to the net and call the vet.
Vet closed early today, but do believe this issue can wait until tomorrow.
I have been reading up on the eye disease entropion and its severe symptoms. My gut feeling is this is not what my dog is presenting.
Though I just noticed a tiny bit of dry, brown discharge in his left eye.
I'll stay in realm of General Dog Conversation and close with my belief that health challenges with our canine friends are a bitch. (pardon my language, not really.)
