I’ve been training my 13 months GSD in basic obedience for some time and recently start using some of Ed’s tips (namely the markers training explained in his Basic Obedience video and to phase the training in learning – correction – distraction), which are working very good. However, I am having troubles in adding speed to my dog’s response. The dog displays a very good sit, a fairly good down and what I believe to be an extraordinary stay (5 minutes down stay with distractions and with me going out of sight for 40/50 seconds). I am not happy with the speed that I get from the dog, though. After the command is given, it looks at me as saying “do I really need to do this?” and slowly puts itself to the position commanded. Any ideas on how to improve the speed with which the command is performed? Do I need to have the dog in high drive to get quick responses?
Be active and encouraging. Use your voice to excite, ncourage and motivate your dog. Choose high-value treats and toys as reward. Reward every correct action and encourage for trying until you get the speed you desire, then move on to random (but still often) reward.
IMO, it works best to get speed before moving on to distraction and correction.
Use the prong collar to motivate your dog. Prong collars don't have to be purely for correction, they can be used to inspire drive and motivation too. Give very quick light taps on the prong while praising in a high pitched enthusiastic excited voice and reward for good behavior. 3 quick tugs on the prong, not hard enough to correct the dog, combined with your own enthusiasm does wonders for a dog's speed, then use a reward to mark the behavior.
