Some of the toy breeds have structural traits that would make it impossible to walk for long distances, and not so much the walking part, but especially the ability to cool themselves. Pomeranians have a tiny muzzle and can not pant efficiently enough to be able to take long walks in summer for example. Other toy breeds (like a min-pin) can give a big dog a run for their money. Body condition will play a factor, as well as how brisk a walk we are talking about. Most toy dogs need to trot to keep up with the average strided human at a walk. I need to run or ride a bike to keep my big dogs in a trot for an hour.
