I've got my fiance into training as a helper with our Schutzhund club (the trainer/main helper is thrilled!) and I'd like to buy him an agitation whip for a couple different purposes. First, just for him to practice with cracking the whip and practice doing the striking motion (not sure if there's a more technical term for this). Second, my Mal is not gun shy and it's not like he runs and hides, but he just gets distracted by the starter pistol and sometimes by the whip. So I'd like to do some desensitizing at home to the sound of either the whip or a cap gun. We've been dropping a prong collar in a spare steel food bowl to make some noise while he eats, but either a cap gun or a whip I think would be even better. And third, our trainer's agitation whip is kinda not doing so hot any more and I wouldn't mind him or my fiance using it during practice. So should I get the regular agitation whip or the suede one?

I don't think that there is so much difference in how most people are using the whip that there's any advantage in using the suede version. But that's just me....
Here's a helpful hint - buy at least a dozen spare poppers for whatever whip you buy, you'll go through them like crazy.
I wondered if I'd get a comment from you! Well, he knows I'm the alpha bitch, so he better not step out of line or he'll need more than just a bite sleeve and scratch pants to protect him. What will the neighbors think? I think I'll probably go with the suede one and take your advice on buying some extra poppers.
Our trainer/main helper loves that I am getting him into it. He's 6'3", a black belt in martial arts like myself, and so he has a natural athletic ability and timing that our trainer says 90% of new helpers don't have. My fiance just wishes he could wear ear plugs for the bark and hold with one of the GSDs who has a rather higher pitched bark.
