I just read an article in the Mobile Press Register entitled "Fate of Pit Bull in Hands of Judge". You can find the first article "Pit bull terrier facing death given temporary reprieve" http://www.al.com/search/index.ssf?/base/news/1149671852159390.xml?mobileregister?nmet&coll=3 . The stray dog Spencer was found dehydrated with a 10 foot chain attached to his neck. The shelter has a policy of only returning pit bulls to owners the rest are put to sleep. The are trying to change this policy. They had a lady named Penny Vaughn who runs a shelter for pit bulls in Clay County,Ala. She testified in her experience 85% of pit bulls could be rehabilitated and adopted out. There is a petition you can contact Cherish Lombard at cherish@comcast.net so far she has collected around 1500 signatures.

That's not an unusual practice at all, as our shelter does it as well as I suppose they think it is too much of a liability. *sigh* That's why I would beg and plead for any bully breed owners to microchip thier dog!

In today's article they tell how until recently that was the policy for all dogs. It was the local newspaper's report last year that started the adoption program they have now. I would like all dog owners to take more responsibility for their animals. Those irresponsible owners are the problems not the breed. Someone dropped off a young boxer/mix male in my neighborhood in the last 2 days. Lucky for him, there is a no kill shelter in this small hick town.

I would like to thank all the people on here that signed the petition to save Spencer. Updating this story: Spencer the pitbull, has been saved. He will be living in Utah. City officials of Mobile were shamed by the public outcry. They finally did the right thing. They reached an agreement with a no-kill shelter in Utah. The city officials are reviewing the policy of killing all pits that find itself in the local shelter. Why they couldn't place the dog to one of the local no-kill I don't know. It makes no sense to send Spencer a thousand plus miles away when there are no-kill shelters closer.
This case showed the local public in 2003, 2600 dogs were put down. There was very little effort if any made to adopt dogs out. After the Mobile Press, exposed city workers for not adopting dogs out. The numbers have improved in 2005, 1300 dogs were put down. I hope this story will encourage people living in the Mobile area to think of adopting their next pet.

Man's Family Hopes to Prevent Future Pit Bull Attacks
Overland Park About to Ban Pit Bulls
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The wife of a man brutally attacked by a pack of pit bulls spoke out Friday, and she shared some disturbing pictures of her husband.
Connie Hill's husband Allen was mowing a yard on East 23rd Street in May when the dogs tore into his face and arms.
He was so badly hurt that he was still in a hospital Friday, and doctors said he might never fully recover.
Connie Hill was passing out petitions and had even set up a Web site - stoppitbullattacks.com - to try to get pit bulls banned for good in Independence.

When I emailed that address you gave, Tracy, I got a nice reply saying she had received well over the number she needed. I'm sure you had a lot to do with that.

Unfortunarely it only takes one irresponsible person to scare people into action which will usually not solve the problem of an irresponsible person. I see this allot in almost everything I do. Nationwide motorcycle fatalities are up amongst acive duty servicemen so we are forced to wear long sleeves and a reflective vest while riding. Most people were killed while riding irradically (between lanes or to fast or one wheel) yet for some reason, long sleeves and a vest should prevent this. There are to many murders in DC so gun control is the answer. Now the law abiding homeowner cannot have a gun to protect their home unless they get one from the street dealers like the criminals do. Here a few dogs attack a person. At some point they belonged to someone but the answer is no more pits. What about the people who's children go around causing problems, drugs, killing, beatings, stealing, etc. When are we going to ban children? I think we as a human race will naturally destroy ourselves with our actions and complain about it while doing so. What a bummer. I tell my kids, try to be a part of the solution, not a part of the problem.

If the dog was sent to UT he's probably at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. If so, he's a very lucky dog whether he can eventually be adopted out or not.

Hi, Elaine. Yes, Spencer was sent to best friends. I'm sure it's a great facility and hope Spencer can be adopted out after being evaluated. The problem I have with it is the local no-kill didn't get a chance. Personally, believe the groups that fought the policy should have been given Spencer. The reason they didn't give him to the locals was simple to keep the follow up in the press to a minimum. City officials knew few if any of the local newspapers or TV will pay to follow up on this story in Utah.
