Hi. I bought my ACD 5 months ago. I got her from a local pet store. Finding an ACD in a pet store is unheard of, and I thought I had scored. But she has been sick since I brought her home. The pet store even said she was very mellow (for her breed) when they got her.
Turns out she had a wicked case of round worm and considerable growth of constridium perefengens (sp). It has taken me this long just too figure all this out.
Her shyness around other dogs is increasing. She's cowering in their presense, and yet I have given her time around other dogs and take her out regularly.
I want to know if an illness in a dog can cause her to act this way, also, can other dogs sense she is sick, and if so would that cause them to be a little aggressive towards her?
I see the same puppies around the neighborhood socializing with other dogs fine, yet when my pup comes around a few tend to start growling and barking at her, which makes her move nervous.
Hi Troy,
I imagine that ill health could very well make a dog try to avoid other dogs, and that the other dogs might very well warn an unhealthy dog away. Not 100% sure of it, though.
If you haven't already, you should take your dog to the vet for a complete checkup.
I will say this, it is not ever a good idea to buy an animal from a pet store. Almost all pet stores are (although they all deny it) supplied with pets produced in puppy/kitten mills, and/or by backyard breeders who aren't very careful about their bloodlines, animal health or anything else. Lots of animals purchased at pet stores are sick, genetically unsound, unsocialized and come from appalling conditions. I sure hope it isn't true for you. IMO buying a dog or cat (or bird) from a petstore is not a good thing to do.
