I have a problem and need some advice. I recently (3 weeks ago) about a GSD and I have since taken him to the vet twice and have discoved he has (what the vet believes) is demodectic mange. The breeder disputes this and said it has never been in this bloodline for over 12 years. When I bought the pup (at 12 weeks) I told her I wanted to breed him. She even mentioned the scrape on his nose and said "it's from the cage he has been in, not to worry it's not a skin disease or anything". She will only respond to me through the email, and she says in a month, she will see if he still has it and then if he does she will take the dog back.
I have four little girls and their hearts are going to be broken if I wait another 4 weeks. Do you have any advice? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
Do a search in this forum on 'Demodex', as this topic has come up a bit. What concerns me is what the vet said: the vet 'believes it's demodectic mange'. Is it demodex or is it not?! All the vet has to do is take a scrape and look at it under a microscope.
Demodex can be brought on by stress or immune deficiencies. Usually if it is stress related, the dogs heal quickly (with proper treatment and care) and build up resistance against the mange. Then it is not an issue concerning breeding. It's an issue if it is a genetic immune deficiency problem. That's probably why your breeder wants to wait a month (healing time).
