Here is an article about a woman who got a pacemaker for her 10 yo Yorkie. http://www.kvoa.com/Global/story.asp?S=5082086 and cnn.com has a video.
I gotta say, I love my dogs but I don't think I would pay 3 grand for a pacemaker if the dog was ten years old and the average life span was around 13.
My trainer has a retired police K9 who is, I think, 8 years old and he recently had a pacemaker implanted. I had no idea such things even existed for dogs, but there you go. Her dog is doing very well and has a new lease on life.
For some people 3K is a lot of money and for others it's not a huge deal, so I guess it's all relative.
My neighbor has a terrier that had a pacemaker fitted a few weeks ago. The dogs heart was beating so slowly that every so often it stoped for around 8 seconds and the dog keeled over!
You can see the lump through the skin on the neck where the pacemaker sits. The dog has to wear a harness and can never wear a collar because a wire runs down the neck to its heart.
I'm sure that a lack of excersise contributed in this case, the dog only gets into the garden never walked.
I think the cost was around £1200 UK and the insurance company paid for it.
$3000 for a dog and probably $30,000 (minimum) for a human. I guess if I ever need one, I'm going to the vet! <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Pacemaker for a 10y/o york isn't bad at all. The dog could easily get at least another 5-6 years if it's otherwise in good condition. I'd definitely go for it unless quality of life would be low or the dog was very old (close to the end). But a small dog of that age should still be looking forward to a few more years at least!
