I am getting a 8 week old GSD and am looking to buy a Kennel Aire Crate and I keep thinking not to buy a big one because the pup will use the back for a bathroom but do you know if Kennel Aire makes dividers or should I buy a Small and then keep getting the next size up? What size do I start with? Extra Small or just Small? <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
I recommend getting a large-sized crate - the size you will need for your dog when she is adult. 500 varikennel or equivalent wire crate, or larger. For the puppy, use cardboard boxes, or stuff the crate with something like that, to reduce the interior size to just big enough for pup to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably. As the pup grows, you can put smaller boxes inside so the area she sleeps in gets larger. That way you only have to buy one crate.
Another idea for a crate divider is to use the oven racks from an old stove - you can usually get them free from an appliance repair place, etc. Some double ended brass snaps are really handy to attach them in place.

I ended up using 2 crates; one small verikennel for the bedroom at night, and one 42" wire in the living room for day and nap breaks. It has worked out well being able to crate in 2 rooms so we can all see each other and she is part of the activity. I didn't start using the large on until she was about 11 weeks because I too was worried she would do her biz in the back.
