During our GSD Brago's rapid growth stage (he went from about 45 pounds to almost 70 in about 5 weeks), he had a short bout with pano in a rear leg. We swam him for exercise then, (and still do) Swimming is a great exercise with low stress on the long bones.
We treated him with plain old buffered aspirin to good effect. Luckily, his episode was very short lived. He has been on Innova Evo in the evening and raw for breakfast since he was 8 weeks old. He has never been overweight at all, he just grew so darn fast.
innova evo is extremely high in protein and that could have contributed to your pup's condition.
from what i have read, evo is good for a short-term food--for on vacation, travel, etc.--but the protein levels are too high for a daily diet and can cause problems.
The biggest part of the diet is raw; chicken quarters, turkey necks and backs, beef heart, ect. The kibble is really just a little munchie before bed time.
My 12 mo. old GSD is on a raw diet taken from Leerburg's sample weekly diet. He is doing great on it, stools are firm, skin and coat are great etc. In an earlier post, I mentioned that he was eating the chicken necks too quickly. I hand fed him for about a week, and then he really started to chew them up on both sides of his mouth - great tip, thanks.
With that being said, I was looking at Innova EVO for a "backup" and don't understand how this food is too high in protein - how can it have a higher percentage of protein than his current diet? My guess is that you mean that the muscle meat to bone ratio is off. If that is true, it seems like a mistake for Innova to formulate the food in this way.
If anyone knows anything about EVO, please respond because it could be a good "transition" food for people who want to go raw, but can't seem to pull the trigger. Thanks.
