I have a young dog that was recently diagnosed with this condition. Does anyone have any experience with this? He is on antibiotics, with some improvement, but the vet is also talking about possible surgery to clean out the joint. The dog has had no injuries that I am aware of, so the origin of the disease is a mystery. Thanks!
Septic arthritis sounds like an infected joint, yes? I've had one with a staph infection inside the joint capsule of the elbow, in the synovial fluid, without any external injury. Is that similar? He cultured it and said it was a very damaging strain of staph, and it did do some damage to the joint surfaces; the dog is pretty arthritic in that elbow now.
Yes, that is exactly the same thing. When cultured, this infection was caused by strep. I'm sorry that your dog stayed lame-that is what I am worried about. The vet is keeping him on antibiotics for 30 days but said that he still might have to operate to clean up the joint if the infection persists. I did a lot of reading online and was trying to find out if the persistent lameness is usually the case before I make the decision to operate. How bad is your dog's lameness? Thanks.
Another consideration for surgery is the age of the dog. If the dog is young enough that the growth plates are still active it would be better to do the surgery sooner rather than later. Infection in joints with active growth plates can cause the damage to the growth plate and cause the leg to not grow properly.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
Mine was 7 when it occurred, began showing intermittent lameness a year later, and it was persistent this year at 9 yr. old. No guarantee that it was the infection and not simple old age and wear-and-tear that caused his lamesness, but Etodolac takes care of it nicely.
