This may have been asked before but I couldn't find it in the search.
If I was to buy either a puppy or a full grown adult dog from the US, would the dog need to be kept in quarantine in the UK?
More importantly would the puppy need to be kept in quarantine and would the journey adversley affect the puppy either in health or temprament?
I know this may be a difficult question so I suppose it's geared more towards people with experience of importing to the UK/Europe or people who have exported to Europe.
The dog needs to be quarantined for 6 months. Here is how we've done the DEFRA process from the US side:
1. Microchip the dog.
2. Administer Rabies Vaccination.
3. Draw blood for Rabies Titre Test.
4. The dog can be shipped to the UK six months from the date of receiving satisfactory Titre results.
5. The dog should be administered Flea & Tick Preventative & Heatworm meds before shipment. The crate needs to be sealed with a shipping seal prior to shipment as well.
The dog doesn't have to be isolated the entire time its in quarantine, there just has to be proof (titre test) that the Rabies Vaccination is effective 6 months prior to shipment to the UK.
