Thanks for the information! I am taking my 12 mo. GSD camping in two weeks and was wondering what to do regarding ticks. I know Frontline works, but I don't want to put that stuff on my kid if it's bad for him. I will try the Adams, Water Based, .15 pyrethrin product.
I've found the Adams Shampoo at a few online stores, but the ingredients are not found online. Do they sell this at pet stores?
We are camping in Wisconsin. Ed's Leerburg Kennels are there. Does anyone know what he uses / recommends?
I found the shampoo with the ingredients you mentioned at Petco. Thanks.
But, I noticed that you were talking about the shampoo and Howard was talking about the spray repellent. Does the shampoo repel also? When I read the label, it sounds like the shampoo is for killing the ticks/fleas while the spray is a repellent. I am looking for a repellent, so what do you recommend? Also, my dog will be swimming everyday, should I apply more than the recommended once a week?
I use the shampoo and the spray. I have run out of the spray and just used the shampoo. It worked, but I bathe my dogs once a month.
Use the spray as a repellant. I bathe the dogs in the shampoo, then let them dry and spray them with the spray.
If you have a gsd you really have to wet the dog down good before applying the shampoo and then make sure you have a soapy lather from root to the ends of his hair. Then leave the shampoo on for about 7-10 minutes, lathering it every few minutes. The longer haired dogs are the hardest to bathe and I've found if you aren't diligent in the application of it, it isn't as effective. Make sure you lather every bit of him. When you spray the spray, use a brush to brush the dogs hair up so you can reach the roots of his hair and skin. Applying to his top coat has little effect because the fleas go to the skin.
You can rinse the salt water off the dog after swimming and apply it again if you want to. (The spray I'm talking about) If you see fleas sooner, apply it sooner, but I've found it to work really well with even just once per month application. How many apps. you'll need is really dependant on your dog and the flea situation.
