I am still trying to get my 9 month old GSD to Bark for me. But she won't no matter how much I try I try to use her fav toy and I try to use her fav food and I tryed to hold her face and say bark then bark her face. And I all out of Ideas. I have been trying this for a month now every other day.
Does she bark ever? If she does say good speak or whatever comand you want to use after she barks. Sometimes a knock on the door will cause a bark, then say good speak. You might have to settle for any noise coming out of her at first. Make sure the smallest noise she makes is rewarded. She may bark in high drive for a prey item or she may bark for food if you tease her with it while she is in her crate. I had one dog that still didn't get it until he saw another dog speak for food rewards. Now he is the loudest one of all. Remember reward the smallest sound it will get louder later. Hope it works for you good luck.

John,
Why do you want your dog to bark for you on command? Is it going to be an alert type behaviour for a certain type of work or is it something you want the dog to perform just because? If you are doing a specific type of work with the dog (cadaver, drugs, explosives or any other odor) I would take the behaviour that the dog offers naturally. For example, I wanted a platz (down) out of my Malinois for her alert on cadaver search but she kept offering me a nice sitz (sit) so instead of struggling with training her to platz when she finds source we incorporated the sitz intead since it was a natural alert for her. She is also coming along nicely with that and also her other obedience commands that I have taught her in German.
Take care.. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I do not have enough knowledge of training the bark and hold yet to really be giving advice yet, but I am sure someone will provide you with good advice soon. I train my dogs for search and rescue in trailing, airscent and cadaver and am pretty much new to learning about the Schutzhund, KNPV and PPD dogs. This site is great for learning though and I and glad that I found it. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

John,
Use the power of frustration to your advantage.
Back tie your dog and tease it with it's favorite toy or food while giving it whatever bark command that you've chosen - eventually most dogs will bark out of frustration from not getting the object/food and when it does reward the dog *immediately*.
Timing is critical here.
Repeat the action a few times and most dogs will get the idea ( the connection between the bark command and barking to get the reward ).
wish i had this problem at times! my pup will bark at my older dogs when they're just napping and doing "nothing". i'm teaching mine "that's enough" with this behavior--just hope i'm doing the right thing.
i sure wouldn't mind some feedback on the *opposite* problem... <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />
