Not sure if this makes any sense - I have a 2 month old GSD pup I have noticed about two weeks ago that she cry's in her sleep as if she gets nightmares or she is in pain - is this normal - I have not experienced this with my 10 month old male when he was smaller?
I was inspired by your post to look up some things on REM sleep in canines. Do you ever notice a breathing disruption or break in breathing pattern while your pup is sleeping? The following link to a study discusses REM sleep being affected by apnea.
I've often wondered about my dog and his dreams too. When the dogs are dreaming, we just figure the way those feet move, and the whelps and yips, it must be a dream about a big squirrel/rabbit chase.
However, after reading this article about apnea (even though somewhat technical), I can see a bit of a corelation. My dog does have some disrupted breathing or rather a different pattern sometimes, where he will breathe out and then there will be a lapse for a second or two and I'll look, watch, and then he will take a deep breath, then breathe normal. I wonder, if based on this study, if that apnea of sorts affects how his dreaming goes later.
Interesting. I've never thought of his breathing thing as an apnea,(he does have a sinus arythemia--sp?) but just thought he was in a deep sleep and of course, am always glad to see the next breath. Hmmmm....
