Thanks for the replies everyone. That's what I needed. Now that I've read it, it makes alot of sense. I'm used to thinking that if the dog doesn't do what I ask, I'll make him do it. I will defenitely have to change the command. Up til now, I had been using "here". He would come close, but not close enough for me to reach him or the toy, if he had it. I would pull the leash to get him to come. At first he faught the leash and shook his head back and forth. When I got him to me, I'd praise big time. He was starting to get it better yesterday and today, but I think I'll be better off to change commands and tactics now that I understand how to do it more motivationally. Thanks again for the help. I'm going to try to order the tape but I'm getting ready to head out of town for my brother's wedding, so it may be a week or two before I can get it.
O.K. I know it's very early, but here's what happened this evening. I tried doing it with treats and he shows no interest in them at all. He's never been big on them. He seems to just be looking around for the toy. I've only used biscuits from various brands. Maybe I should try something else? So, then I decided to try the toy as motivation. He gets so excited about the toy that he just bounces around, sits, downs (expecting me to tell him to), when I say come (which is what I switched to from here) he'll come slightly forward then down again. I try to reel him in and he gets all squirrelly again. I was getting frustrated so I stopped, not wanting to confuse him more than he all ready is. After a couple hours, I just walked him go potty. I don't know why, but I decided to try it with no treat or toy, just praise when he comes, and it seems to be working much better. He comes right to me, but doesn't keep his focus on me. He looks other directions until I have him do something else, stay, heel, whatever. Should I stick with no motivation other than praise or what?
