Has anyone ever heard of Jan Fennell? If so, what are your thoughts? Her books were recommended to me on another training board and I wanted to know what this groups' thoughts are on her training materials.
Personally, I like her -- her approach is somewhat similar to Cesar Milan's, IMHO...
Jan Fennell's excellent on "alpha boot-camp" or what Ed Frawley calls Groundwork -- but she stops short of corrections (still, I found the 2004 edition of "The Dog Listener" worth reading in regard to her techniques of Amichien Bonding).
I think she makes a great foundation for a program tailored to living with dogs. Of course it's geared towards pets but it's fantastic for explaining nonviolent means of establishing and retaining leadership over a dog and maintaining it. I wouldn't follow everything she does to a "T" especially when it comes to corrections but that will depend on the dog's temperament, the owner's ability to project solid leadership, what the dog's purpose is, etc.
What I am interested in learning is whether her style of living with dogs as well as Cesar's is detrimental to a working dog as far as drive reduction and other working dog aspects. I'm thinking it doesn't so long as everything else is done correctly, such as drive building, but I'd love the experts to weigh in on that.
I really enjoyed her book. Such an easy read, NOT about obedience per say. But really good about the 'dogs are dogs not people' and WE NEED TO LEARN to look at dogs that way.
