Took my 2 terriers out for a long walk on Saturday morning, got back home & all was fine.
Around 11am, my male started to shake all over & become very anxious & started to pant heavily. There was no saliva/frothing at the mouth, no soreness or redness in the mouth & the gums were normal in colour. No vomiting or retching.
An hour later he was still shaking so I rang the vet & took him in. They couldn't find anything & didn't think he had eaten anything. They thought something had a neurological effect on him ie: contact with a weird plant etc. (wasn't a snake bite & he hadn't been stung).
He got a valium shot to calm him down and we went home. He had another shaking attack for about an hour at around 4pm.
Is there any plant that may cause this to happen, has this happened to anyone else?
No one would normally plan to fail, but plenty of us fail to plan!
Did the vet check your dog's anal glands? Some dogs act nervous, pant and act strange if the anal glands are too full..I run my grooming shop in a vet's office and just recently someone brought their dog in with the same symptoms your dog had... he was up all night pacing, panting and acting weird.
The vet checked him out and everything seemed fine, no temp, no vomiting etc... he checked the anal glands and they were EXTREMELY full...
He calmed down as soon as the vet expressed them.
It may be something else but worth checking (if the doc didn't already do it)
No, the vet didn't do bloodwork as his temp was ok etc. She wanted to wait & see how he did during the afternoon/evening.
I will get her to look at his anal glands.
Yes, he does get a bit wobbly & grouchy if we are particularly late with the evening meal - but he doesn't shake violently like he was doing (looked like the poor little chap had parkinsons!).
He's been fine since, but I want to avoid amything that may prompt another episode.
