My 11 month GSD (english line distant german) is a wondeful bitch, well trained for her age - prob is she lunges at some dogs when onlead and will chase dogs that run when off lead, if i catch her in time she will recall... but otherwise she's off! my concern is she goes for the back of the neck in preditory fashion and whilst i hope this is play it doesn't look too good for the other owner !! if the chased dog stops and squares up she comes hurtling back to me......
my other dog is retriever and they are used to play chasing fun fighting etc.... thoughts? thanks
i believe what you have here is a simple case of handler error. see what you have done by letting your dogs play together in that fassion was in a sense tell your dog that it is ok for her to do this. think of it this way if you let a 3 year old child use foul words in the house then he is going to think it is ok to use them anywhere. you have set the ground work for your dog to play like this. Also if the girl wont come back to you when called then she may not have a solid enough recall and should never be off lead unless she is in a complete 100% controlled enviroment. the first thing you need to do is not allow your dogs to play together like that. then use a pinch collar and everytime she tries to go after a dog you give a FIRM correction and tell her NO DOGS. you can also fix this with an electric training collar if you have one. hope this helps.
many thanks for your comments: "catch her in time" meant off lead but within say 20 ft, she will always respond then to recall. I think you have both made good observations, certainly i do let my pair fool around and this i need to control.... getting instant recall with dog distractions is something i do need to work on.... agree with the "no" command and this will work most of the time... just need to perfect it.
i guess my main concern is what motivates my GSD (Breeze) to chase down lunge and occasionally bark at other dogs, i think it may be fear driven - thanks again
Thanks Hayley - they do have toys they go nuts for and they do work.... sad that your's got nicked... should have sent doggies to "Find" could've been interesting!!! thanks for your comments
