I was using water from a Brita pitcher for Auster (there's a whole house filter system too). I still drink water from the same pitcher without problems, but she and my mother are both sensitive and only get bottled water. If we weren't renting I would get a reverse osmosis filter (the landlord won't even fix the fridge that drips, forget about another water filter). The Walmart near us has refillable Culligan gallons and it is only 38 cents to refill them so Auster is getting that for now.
If you see an improvement with the water switch you might be able to make it even better with probiotics. You can try giving yogurt with lactobacillus and bfidus, but Auster can't have dairy so that cancels out the good effects of the bacteria. She just gets the people probiotics (nothing special).
Sorry to hear about the vet. If I had access to the tubes the vet uses I would just draw blood at home (you would have to meet the cat at the vet's office to understand). It's not hard but does require the right tube and a centrifuge.
