I have been researching for some time now what to feed my puppy (9 week old Golden). He's on Eukanuba right now, just as a temporary solution because it was close to what the breeder was feeding him. I think he has skin allergies (probably the corn) and I want to get him on a better diet.
Though we have more than enough to support him, I can't really afford to feed him completely RAW or the dehydrated food on the site, though I wish I could. Hopefully someday. (A friend of mine said once, "I eat 50 cent pizzas and feed my dog lamb!" It's true...he eats better than I do already!)
So I was looking for a better alternative to the premium commercial kibble like Eukanuba, which has too much corn in it. I found Life's Abundance holistic pet food (www.lifesabundance.com) and it looks really good. I searched this forum for information but all I came up with was a forum comparing this to a Wolf's Cub, and it was more of a review of Wolf's Cub. So sorry to open another post, but does anyone have any information about Life's Abundance? It will probably itself be a transition food until we can feed raw.
Also, what about supplementing a "commercial" kibble like this? They say supplementation isn't necessary, but aren't most of the nutrients lost in processing anyway? Could a vitamin C and E pill for antioxidants hurt anything?
Canidae is a good kibble that is pretty reasonably priced (around $1/# in my area). There's also Innova and California Naturals that are really good.
I give my dog two meals a day - one kibble and one raw. She has done really well with it. For her raw I give her a rotation of turkey necks, chicken leg quarters, beef or pork neck bones, lamb ribs, canned sardines or mackeral, beef and chicken heart, liver, kidney. Most of it is obtained in 1-3# pkgs at Wal-mart or a local market and it averages out to about $1/#. I give her some suppliments, fish oil caps and vit E several times a week, glucosamine/msm several times/week, biotin a couple times a week when her allergies flare up. I also add kelp, alfalfa, and lecethin on occasion.
