Hello all,
I forget which of Ed's videos it was, but Cindy shows you how to properly pet your dogs if you are raising 2 at once.
For those that have not seen the video, she basically pushes dog 2 away and pets dog 1. She continues to push tod 2 away if it tries to 'butt inn.' When she's done petting with dog 1, she pushes him away and pets dog 2...
If you own a dog, and introduce a second dog, you would pet the original dog first, then the 2nd dog. (You would of course go thru all the proper steps to make the first dog understand that the new dog is a new pack member)
My question is, (and this is not the case for me but i can't figure it out on my own) if you buy 2 pups at once and raise them together, keeping them is seperate crates ect ect... which pup would you pet first? Do you alternate who you pet first, say pet dog 1 first today and dog 2 first tomorrow or will that cause more problems?
Would you pet whichever of the 2 dogs is more dominant? What if both dogs are equally dominant?
I hope what I'm trying to ask is clear. Thanks for your time!
Flu,
If my memory servers me correctly, you pet the Alpha dog first. So if your dog number one is your Alpha then that is the dog you pet first. Memory tells me that you do this in order of your pack. Example:
I have a pack of 3 Me, Wife and Dog
When I come home from work, I always go to my wife first, even with my dog jumping up and all of that, he is only 6 months and get very excited when I come home in the afternoon. So I go and hug my wife first, she is the top of the food chain. Once I have greeted my wife and spent a minute or two with her, then I have my dog lay down before I will pet him, that way he is not jumping all over the place.
So you pet the Alpha dog first and work your way down the pack structure. If I had two dogs, my dog now would be the first one I petted and the new one would be second but only when I said it was time and not when they wanted it.
BTW: Ed does not recommend raising two pups at once.
