Sorry this is so choppy and not well thought out, but I am hurrying to get ready for a hurricane.
I know that we have already done this, but I did not think anyone would mind going over the essentials of emergency preparedness. As ernesto bears down on us (South Florida) I just wanted to get a thread going so as to remind everyone to have everything neccessary for bugging out with their dogs. Might want to add what each of us includes in our "Bug Out Bag"in order to help us all be as ready as we possibly can. Essentials should include
a collar with id tags,
a leash,
a cage,
food,
water,
medicine
Please add to the list so that everyone can benefit.

Temporary tags on your dogs with telephone numbers of someone who will not be evacuating and will know where you are.
This may sound weird/gruesome, but I heard someone, last year during Katrina, say that writing your name and a phone number on your (and your kids) inner arm, with a sharpie marker was a good idea. We are suggesting that to folks in our community if evacuation is ever necessary. Maybe dog info too?

Please be sure to have your cell phone number on the ID tags too. In Katrina there were some pets with only landline phone numbers on their collars, not useful when owners are evacuated and landlines are down. Also, most people have their phone with them all the time. Good luck.

Micro chip your dog(s) prior to any trouble, collars can come off. Remember to use your cell number when you register the chips.
Also for us on the west coast (earthquake country) I have small kit I keep in all of the cars for the dogs – extra water, 1 days worth of food and extra leashes.
If an earthquake hits while I am out there may not be a survival kit to come back to.
Just an idea.
Unfortunately, after Katrina our cell phones did not work for several weeks and in some areas longer due to downed towers. An emergency number of someone that you would be in contact with outside the area would also be a good idea. Maybe written on the dogs inner thigh with a sharpie.
When I started this thread my intention was just to remind everyone of the thread Will had going about a year ago. But the experiences of those who went thru Katrina are adding quite a bit of useful info. It looks like Palm Beach county will only feel the effects of a tropical storm but all this info is extremely useful for all of us. It is still a good idea to have a bug out bag ready to go in a easy to locate spot in the event you have to get out in a hurry. keep up the good advice it helps us all to be prepared
