I've begun using an e-collar on my 14 month old doberman and recently purchased Ed's video on remote training (great video!). One thing I haven't been able to find any info on (and it may not be a big deal just curious) is if when you first use the prong with the e-collar to do dual corrections which collar should be higher up on the neck. The both sort of interfere with each other (though not in effectiveness too much) and I want to make sure I am doing it correctly.
I think I probably care about it more than my dog but in case anyone has any opinions I thought I would ask here since I have read so many informative things here that I have based the past 8 months of training on (with the help of Ed's DVD's and articles). I'm so happy I found this site before I found my pup and skipped a multitude of handler errors I would have otherwise done. Now if I can only fatten him up a bit (as per my post on pup thinness). <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
to the best of my knowledge you should put the pinch higher. here is why, the lower you go on a dogs neck the less nerves they have there for no feeling. a pinch is a very soft correction and really only effects the area being pinched. an e-collar is a VERY small amout of electricity however it is still electricity and can and will travel a small distance which will end up reaching the nerves high on a dogs neck.
to prove my point grab a handfill of skin low on the neck i bet you will get no reaction really. if, don't really do this, you grabed a handful high on the neck you will get a reaction. this is how it was explained to me and from what i saw it is true and works.
Thanks Jason, that is what I thought too. They seem to jostle each other around a bit but the prong seems to work without my even doing anything (and it's not chokingly tight just snug) at the top.
