I realize the at 10 weeks old it may be hard to determine how much drive a puppy will have as it matures and that dogs mature at different rates.
I will ask my question anyway.
Is there any way to tell if a puppy will be condidered a "high drive" dog at ten weeks old?
Is there anything that it should be domonstrating at different times as it grows? Should it be showing certain behavior at 12 weeks, 6 months, 1 year etc....
I know its a very broad question. Im a novice trying to learn.
From what I've read, there are certain tests (there's one here in Leerburg somewhere), but they only increase the chances the dog will turn out to be high drive, it's not 100%. I've heard of high drive puppies that after teething turn out to be duds. I've experienced the opposite...my GSD pup had a very, very low drive from when I got him at 7.5 weeks till he was 6.5 months, to the point where I was being told when I asked for help that I should get another dog. Then it's like someone flicked a light bulb. Now there's only one word for his prey drive--intense. It's less play than anything else, if you're not one step ahead of him you're gonna get hurt. His drive is explosive, you can turn it on in a second with a word (no off button unfortunately, it peters out over time).
So yeah, you're right, it's a pretty broad question. I suppose you have to look at the overall picture of the pup...the type of 'drive' it shows (my pup never chased after random objects but when you manage to perk his interest and he bit he bit really hard, really fast). The overall idea I think is after one year (or more if your breed is slow-maturing), and he's still not the type of dog you'd like, very little chances of him turning a new leaf over.
