I just thought I'd post about the drug dog class we graduated 9/1/06. 2 GSD's, 1 Rottie, 1 Golden, 1 Chessie and 3 Labs. The class was eleven weeks long, usually it's only 10 but the heat really slowed us down a bit. The 2 GSD's will start patrol dog training in February. We worked the standard 4 odors. We had one police officer from a nearby city, the rest were Troopers. Police departments like my class, it's free, on a space available basis. Next up is an explosives detection class. Only 4 dogs schceduled for it. Then a patrol dog class in February and a drug dog class tentatively scheduled for mid-June of 07. Looks like they fully intend on keeping me busy until my retirement in 09, 27 months (but whose counting) away.

Actually he did very well. His biggest problem was stamina, but the heat really was oppressive. I'm not a big Rottie fan, it's just a personal issue, I took him because I needed a dog, he was available and did have the drive I was looking for. He's really a pussycat though. Not afraid of anything I've seen yet, but doesn't really appear to have an aggressive bone in his body.

Good to hear you got a good one. I see your attitude is about the same as mine. I love Rotties and owned a couple and they were great pets but that was about it. I did have the privelage of running one through the paces last year that had what it takes and it was alot of fun.
Now I think the big plus is staying busy 'till you retire playing the dog game. Generally the best place to work in any department.
I still have to wait until early 2011 to pull the plug. Not sure what I'll do after that but maybe a hunting dog is in the future along with leisurely hunting and fishing trips.
Hope they let me stay with the dog program until then. I'm assured I'll be there through 2009 but after that is a big question mark.

The department has already told me, when I hit the retirement age, I can give up my commission and stay on as a civilian. I don't really think I want to do that. 45 years working with dogs is enough. I have however become interested in herding of all things. It has always fascinated me. I've attended a couple of seminars and workshops and it interests me even more. I have the land, I may buy a few sheep and give it a try. If it doesn't work out, I'll be sure to invite you to the BBQ. ha ha. With an explosives class and a patrol dog class already on the schedule, I know I'll be busy. I'm sure I'll need to do a drug class after that, there are a few nearing that magical retirement age for dogs. I've not lost my passion for training, I guess it's hard to describe exactly what I'm feeling, but I think 2 more years is about all I really want to do. Hope your situation works out for you. Perhaps they'll recognize how difficult it is to find a good trainer.
