Hello all,
I feed my 2 yr old GSD raw food and have since he got his adult teeth. I'm getting a new puppy and want to feed her raw food. I'm going to feed her mainly chicken wings and beef hearts. I assume puppy teeth are ok to eat raw meaty bones. My concern is when she starts teething is it still ok to continue feeding the raw meaty bones? Just curious to see what some of you guys and gals do.
Thanks,
Andrew

Andrew,
Feed away should be no problems, when mine was teething really bady we frooze his RMB like chicken necks and wings. Will be nice and cold on the teeth adn a bit soothing. I had the same ?? and Connie assured me all was cool. Connie knows a bunch about RAW feeding and if you have ?? she is a great resource.
Hmm wonder if Connie will slap me for that one :-)

Yes, I will, but there's no "slap" icon. Hmmmm.
Many people here know more than I do about raw, but I have a bigger mouth. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Just chicken wings and beef hearts won't be perfect, because it's so much organ meat, and no variety. But if you read these two sites, you'll be good to go.
You want organ meat to be 5-10% of the whole (or at least, I do).

Don't forget salmon oil and vitamin E! <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I could be wrong, but it was always my belief that the heart is a muscle and not an organ; therefore, the combination of wings and hearts (RMBs and muscle meat) is basically okay. I would then add in the 5-10% organ meat - liver, kidneys, etc. - or did I read this all wrong?
As you think, so shall you be. |

If you're right, I'm 100% wrong. I always considered heart as offal, or organ meat, but what you say makes sense now that I read it.
Good catch. I'll check it out later, but it sure makes sense.

From NJBoxer.com: QUOTE Offal (or organ meat, e.g. heart, kidney, liver, tripe, etc...) is usually mixed in with the veggie meal, because many dogs do not like the taste (some do). Just be careful not to feed too much, too quickly, as offal is very rich and too much will cause loose stools. END
BUT I looked at three other saved raw sites, and they are half and half as to heart being muscle or organ meat! I honestly don't know the answer.
I guess if you think of muscle as "voluntary muscle" meat, the heart is excluded. Otherwise, you sure are right that it is a muscle.

Anyone else?

Thanks for the replies. I also believe that heart is muscle meat rather than organ meat. I rarely feed liver to my boy because it really gives him the runs. As long as it's ok for a teething pup to have chicken bones I think I will be good. Thanks again for the quick responses.

I think you'll find that your pup actually enjoys the bones more during teething, and they are certainly good for him. I would still try to feed a little bit of liver - even if it is in freeze-dried treat form - because he does need some organ meat. Give him a little bit of canned pumpkin (100% pure pumpkin, NOT pumpkin pie mix) if he starts to have the runs again. Good luck and enjoy the white teeth and shiny coat!
As you think, so shall you be. |
