Hello
My male German Sheperd bumped to my knee several times during play session while he was charging for the ball. I noticed a golf ball sized lump on his right ribcage a few days ago. When I press it, it is fluid-filled and slightly movable. I suspected a hetmatoma due to blunt trauma. I took him to the vet yesterday, and she aspirated with needle and confirmed as hematoma. However, it filled right back up to previous size in couple of hours. He does not complain of pain.
Has anybody out there had similar incidents with your dogs? What else could I do meantime? How long did it last before it disappears? Any suggestions or remedies?
Surgery can be done to insert a drain. Sometimes draining with a needle and applying pressure might work, but obviously that isn't an option with the dog's chest. I also found several pages that mention injecting cortisone into the site.
My only experience has been with ear hematomas that have been treated surgically.

Lauren, this makes me wonder if your thinkin of hemangios???
ok...here my .02
a hematoma isa bruise in a pocket of skin (Im an EMT see em all the time on people, not very often on dogs) ..we generally call them hema tomatos. If it isnt bothering the dog or getting worse, .put gentle warm pressure on it, and then comb it (think back to getting rid of hickeys tricks) it helps break it down and re-absorb. If your vet is holistic friendly ask about arnica montana to give to the dog for healing.
even if this post is older maybe it will help someone with their own dog
Basically, the hematoma is re-filling when it's draned. Either a surgical drain needs to be emplaced, an I &D done, or some form of direct pressure needs to be matained over the site for several hours after an aspiration is done.
Those are your medical choices.
