I am a K-9 Trainee and we are about half way through our training. I have a 2 year old Mal from the Netherlands. I believe he has some KNPV training. While my Dept does not do foot step tracking, we are taught to slow them down as we track as not to blow corners or terrain changes. I was wondering is that when I get out on my own if I could adopt Tracking Through Drive??
It is quite easy to change to TTD from any other type of tracking as long as your dog has good drive. Line handling is also a big component of TTD, which might 'differ' from other tracking. (you want a nice tight line on the dog for TTD).
It is MUCH harder however to do the opposite. Take a dog trained in TTD and move to footstep tracking. I believe Ed has articles on this site for TTD. I took some training with Garry Murray (R.C.M.P. dog handler in Canada) in TTD and really enjoyed it. One needs to be very physically fit mind you to do TTD with a good dog!!!
In TTD it is often assumed that a dog will over shoot a corner and this is where you train them to circle to refind the track.
David… converting you Mal to TTD is easy. I’m a real big fan of Ed’s Tracking Level 2&3 Video.. Suburban and Urban Tracking. In my opinion it’s the best police tracking video out, period. The training concepts for TTD are all put together in the Level 2&3 video and it will put you on a “schedule” of training activities and details how to progress with your dog.
Track through drive to bring your apprehension % up. Your fellow officers and the public will love you. The bad guys wont <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
