i have been around quite a few police dogs and when interacting with other dogs i have seen them hackle up when first meeting the dogs but it goes right away i would just like some insight on this from k9 handlers
I don't undferstand why a police K9 handler would allow his dog to be near other dogs. The best service dogs completly ignore other dogs. They need to be like this if they are to track suspect in an urban enviornment where they have to go through yards or by yards with dogs barkng at the fence. If a dog cannot do this its value as a service dog just went down about 50%
During training events and similar gatherings as you describe there is a lot of "doggie testosterone" flowing. You've got a collection of high drive, well trained dogs. That there would be some posturing is not all that uncommon. As Mr Frawley stated, once the work begins that all goes away and it's back to business.
