I just purchased a 2007 FJ Cruiser and I'm needing a custom built aluminum crate for the cargo area. I'm wanting one designed to fit with the back seats upright which have an angle.
I'm seriously considering ordering from Kustom Krates. Their quality seems superb but the cost is high. does anybody here have experience with them or anybody else?

Check with the metal shops in your area. I've been looking into the same thing and found two local shops that will sell me the material. Then find yourself a welder, someone who knows what they're doing. Aluminum is different than steel to weld. The price of the material is about 1/3 the cost of what these crates are selling for. The labor is what drives the price up. So if you can find someone who will do this on the side, you might be able to save some money. Another bonus would be having your vehicle there for the guy to see and take the measurements from.
Think in this case “custom” will have attached to it a “custom price”.
Not all welders (Both equipment and people) can weld aluminum. And some (both) that can cannot do it well. So, ask to see a sample of their work when interviewing potential welders. You will see a vast array of qualities.
Making a custom doggie transporter for the bed of my pickup is something I have milled around in my head for a while. Please let us know what you find out and what you decide. I, for one, am interested.
FWIW, you guys might consider stopping by a custom road/off-road bicycle shop in your area. Some of those guys are quite talented with CAD and metalwork and TIG welding and virtually all like money...might get them interested in a side business. Just a thought.
I remember seeing something on these forums about big stainless steel crates. Kustom Krates? Was that the name of it? I'll check my bookmarks and see if I saved the URL.
