Hi,
I'm wondering how you all initially got involved in the sport of Schutzhund? I'm very interested in learning more about Schutzhund. It really seems like a dog sport that I would love. I love training, bonding, being outside with my dog. I contacted a local group, was invited to watch a "clinic." I loved the focus of the dogs and intent of the handlers. I've purchased a book, just to give me an overview. I understand it involves 3 components, and it sounds like the dogs are generally of very stable temperaments. What else can I do, to get a little "closer" to the sport?? My present dog, is not Schutzhund material, I'm doing agility training with her and we are having alot of fun. She is a rescue, so its great to watch her confidence increase. Anyway, I'm considering getting another dog. I know a dog from working stock seems to be favorable for participation. Am I correct??
Do the clubs train as a group?? Or do you "lesson" with a trainer?? How do you know who is "legit?"
Can I get involved in someway, if I don't already have a dog for the sport?
Linda,
You are on the right track, you would want to get ahold of a club that would allow you to come out and watch. I think most clubs would rather you come watch first to see if this is something that you would really be interested in after you see it up close.
A dog from working lines is favorable but there are plenty of show lines as well. To get closer to the sport, I would do what you are already doing, go to a club that you feel comfortable in and watch, if you don't have a dog yet, thats okay too. You can help out with club trials, and regional events as well. Most clubs that I know of train in groups a couple times a week. Then some tracking on your own, after you learn how to track your dog. And what ever else you feel you can work on, on your own. I would look over the Schutzhund USA website. Just google it and you will find what you are looking for.
I hope that I have helped some. I am also just a few years into the sport, so there are *** plenty *** of more experienced trainers out there!
Where are you located, maybe I know someone in your area?
Thanks for your suggestions. Glad to know that I'm proceeding in the right direction. I would definitely get a feel for the sport, most importantly the time comittment factor to train correctly. I love to train!! So it should not cramp my style, so to speak. But really, I am not going to rush into it without getting some exposure.
I live in New Jersey...do you know of anyone in this area??
Brandon,
I just checked out your blog site. Your dogs look quite nice!! Two, I'm jealous! HA HA.
Do you train both?? If so, how do you coordinate the training of two?? When you work with your club and or trainer, do you crate them, and then work one at a time, or do you work them on seperate occassions?? Just curious how other people juggle...work, family, home and dogs.
Linda where are you located?
My thoughts on this is , the best way to get involved in any hobbie or sport is to go and watch.Ask questions to all Schutz members and ask about dogs you see out on the field. It's a bit hard to start a dog with a novice handler(as far as the Schutzhund aspect) that is already an adult .We start the foundation work at a very young age, and I am not saying that it's not possible but it is hard.
Our cklub is in Nevada , I would open an invitation to you but I am not sure that you are in my state or near.Schutzhund is a great sport I have been a competitor for 6 years and I love it, our club is like a big family, we all talk dog, dog, dog ,dog and nothing but dog. I hope you find a good club near you and enjoy the sport with your pooch.
Good luck!
