I'll be moving in a months time, and because I'll have the space and the time, I'm searching for a dog to potentially train with in Schutzhund. Unfortunately, there are no Schutzhund clubs in the area I'm moving to, which is pretty much out in the middle of nowhere, by the way. The closest one is 4 or 5 hours away.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do? Obviously Schutzhund is a two person sport, at the very least - handler and helper. Maybe I could "recruit" the help of a local, purchase some training videos, books, etc, and take a try at it myself?

Well, whaddaya know? I asked this very question two days ago on another board, and the advice I got was to get these DVDs:

"Preparing Your Dog for the Helper"
QUOTE: In this tape we show the handler how he or she can work by themselves to prepare a dog to start protection work on a helper. END
Pretty cool that I just found out about that first one myself, and now here is someone else who wants the same thing!
I haven't ordered the first video mentioned, but I think highly of the "Building Drive and Focus" video mentioned. We refer back to that one constantly with our dog Ferguson and his on-going work.
I am thankful every day for the resources available here, combined with the personal help of an experienced teaching helper. That's optimal. But I don't think you can go wrong with the video whether you do or you don't have access to top notch "in person" training.
Drive and Focus is an excellent DVD. I am sure i will be ordering Preparing for the Helper next. Then I just have to find someone who thinks it is fun to catch a dog.

I hope you find someone who KNOWS how to catch a dog, and can READ the dog, and can HELP your dog (and you) beyond catching it. Now that's a wonderful world!
Hey Ashley,
What state are you in? If I can find it, there is a fellow that is compiling a list of people who are too far away from a club. I'll post it if I find it and you may be able to find some people on that list in your area to form a club. I am also in a similar situation but I do have one within 65 miles but would want one closer. Good Luck

Holy moly! You really are moving to the middle of nowhere!!! When the city "skyline" includes a water tower that you expect to see Billy Jo and Bobby Sue bathing in, you know you are in trouble!
LOL It's not that bad, really. I do like being able to see the stars at night.
