PS I dont agree with escape training either. i have gotten ALL my success with my dogs from Ed so i trust his word over anyone elses when it comes to training dogs. To add to someone elses question, yes i did condition the dogs extremely well to the collars for 2 weeks. on, treat. off, treat. never turned the collars on at all during that time. they get excited anytime i pick the collars up. (i still treat them when they go on and off). but definately. that is very important to do for anyone considering training with an ecollar! thanks for pointing it out!
The ONE thing I personally use "e-voidance" training for (continuous HIGH stim) is getting into the garbage -- I do it by setting my dog up for the irresistible temptation while I'm hiding out of the dog's view (but I can see her) and the instant she heads for the trash, then I zap her til she bolts out of the kitchen...
In this situation, I don't want to let her know I'm part of the equation at all, because I want her to leave it alone PERIOD, not just because I command her to & not because I correct her for disobeying -- So far, my Akita has only needed 1 original zap of this training method, plus 1 refresher zap about 9 months later <:-)
Candi,
I also understood that avoidence training without a voice command was accepted for behaviors just like you describe. And other pack-related/behavioral issues that one wanted to stop, whether it be jumping on furniture, people, or going after other dogs or kids aggressively. I thought that since it is flat out unacceptable behavior, and not an obedience issue, that the correction was given without the command. I thought obedience-based corrections were given the no, followed by low level nick, but that innapropriate behavior-based corrections didnt need a command or no, but were given at high levels and continuous until the behavior stops. I think that is where I am getting confused because I have heard Ed say this several times throughout the video, but now seems like hes advocating using commands for innappropriate behavior. I thought the original recommendation for using no commands and continuous high level stim made sense for NON-obedience issues (pack issues), like you have done with the garbage problem (seemed to work didnt it?). But i think im just confused now.

Lauren, you own Ed's e-training video, but do you also have his "Dealing with Dominant and Aggressive Dogs" DVD ??? That one would be perfect for your needs <:-)
I dont have that particular video. Does it have a step-by-step instruction and demonstration for using the e-collar? thats specifically what im looking for. I wont be comfortable attempting to address any agression issue with an e-collar without first knowing exactly what i need to do and how!
It isn't so much a step by step recipe as it is a whole approach to dealing with dominant and aggressive dogs. It helps you identify what type of aggression you are dealing with and solutions to many of the aggressive issues (like fence fighting, serious pulling on a leash, breaking up a dog fight, food agression.) I know there is more, going from memory.
The DVD also outlines how to live with a dominant dog.
Between that DVD and the basic ob. DVD I have a been able to transform my dog from when we brought him home from the shelter. He is still learning and won't mind anyone except my wife and I (which is fine with us). Neither of us are experts or even very experienced and the DVD helped us. Our dog was also not really aggressive more just pushy and a brat.
Hi Chris,
thanks for writing. I have read Eds articles about dealing with dominant and aggressive dogs and have also turned both of my dogs around miraculously through his methods outlined on the website. From the point of literally trying to kill each other to now 2 years later, they are happy to sleep on the floor togther and I have seen a 99% improvement in their behaviors this way. I feel that I have a good, realistic grasp on living with and managing agressive and dominant dogs.
So I am not looking for more instruction on how to be a pack leader or anything like that, but specifically in correctly using an ecollar for managing and going further with their progress. This all started when I emailed Ed that I was not strong enough to give an effective correction with a prong collar on my one female, so he recommended I get an ecollar.
I have the ecollar, and so now all Im looking for is some guidance and direction on how to use it properly!!!!!!!
