Hi Jenni. I know what you mean about the relative "open mindedness" of vets on the subject of food. The vet clinic we use has several vets. One of them we won't see at all, the rest of them we will see for standard stuff like rabies shots, and one of them is the one we see for any more serious stuff. He's very devoted to the animals. While he doesn't advocate raw feeding from the top of the mountain, he is supportive of our choice, and acknowledges how well all of our dogs are doing on raw food. (coats, teeth, weight especially for the Beagle, etc.) So I guess in the grand scheme of things, we're lucky! (but they do sell Science diet there.....)
Debbie, I know what you mean about Science Diet. When our Beagle gained a bunch of weight, seemingly over night, then got very sick with some sort of electrolyte imbalance, they recommended Science Diet Senior Lite (or something like that) in VERY small quantities to get his weight down. This poor dog acted like he was starving to death, and the weight loss was OH so slow. That's when my hubby started seriously researching raw feeding and general dog food info. I know that raw feeding has extended this dog's life for sure. He's like a much younger dog now!!
Which all ties back to the original topic about tracking food. This Beagle LOVES to track!! He loves having a job. The minute I get him out of the crate and put the leash on, and then say "let's go to work" his nose hits the ground long before we get even close to the scent pad. So the quality of tracking food was very important to me - I didn't want him to take a step back in overall health while doing something he enjoys so much.
LOL - we're still at the 3 straight track phase, with the middle track getting longer and longer. Last Saturday on the "warm up" track, Dave said "his name should be Hoover." Then on the "teaching track" Dave said "no, his name should be Eureka." Then on the "final success" track, Dave said "nope. Orek XL (sp)" <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> We hope to start turns this Saturday. I think he'll do just fine.
debbie, i have to agree. (worst mess i have ever fed my dogs) i very nearly lost a dog on that stuff. i kept thinking there had to be something wrong with her since i was feeding her the "best dog food available." HA! she is still one of my hardest keepers, but at least now i am wise to the ingredient dilema. i pretty much know what she can and can't tolerate.
if there are no dogs in heaven, then when i die i want to go where they went. ---will rogers
