One person can take a 10mg and get zonked out, while another person (same weight, etc) would barely feel it. Go with your vets' recommendations, but I would start with the lowest possible dose. Be aware that it can make them more hungry than usual, and not have as reliable bladder control. There are other anti-anxiety meds besides Valium that may not have as many or as undesireable side-effects; talk with your vet.

I told him that I couldn't see that it was helping..so he told me I should be giving her 4 or 5 at a time,since she weighs 87 lbs. Just keep in mind, this is not a medication that is needed often. 4th. of July is certainly one and in the event of severe storms.

Do you mean each one is 2 mg., or what? This is a vague suggestion; it might encourage someone to give 4 or 5 of a different size tablet to their dog. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> NOTE: Please don't read this and think that you can or should take 4 or 5 Valium (Diazapam) tablets and give them to your dog, no matter what size the dog might be; these pills come in different dosages.

Four or five 10-20 tabs would lay out the biggest baddest dude that ever walked, if not kill him! When my tiny dog had a siezure he took ONE-QUARTER of a 2 mg tab and it zoned him.

Always listen to your vet when it comes to medication. The dose that I was referring to was 5mg. For a dog that weighed 93lbs. at that time, 5mg was not enough. The vet told me to increase the dose. As I said before, this is not something that is done on a regular basis, only when extreme storms are raging,or 4th of July fireworks.

For an "as needed" ( prn ) dosage, 10 mg. would be the usual recommended dosage for a dog as large as Carolyn's. I understand 100% that individuals, both human and canine, can react very differently to diazapam. You're 100% correct that I was cautioning other members not to give 4 or 5 of their Valium tablets to their dogs on their own ---- not questioning your individual experience in needing to give 20 to 25 mg.
