I took my 20 Month old work dog to the vet the other day for a general physical. The vet wanted to run a full blood work up to establish a base line for any future issues that may come up during his career. The vet called me today and said that there were two things he noticed that we will check again in August when we go back for his rabies booster.
1) His sodium level was at the top end of the normal range. I was advised not to worry about this as working dogs will have higher sodium levels in the winter time from licking the road salt offof their paws.
2) His protein levels are on the high side of the normal range. The vet said we will keep an eye on this and re-test in August. He's on Royal Canin Large Breed right now... 4 1/2 cups daily..no treats..no people food. He is a very lean 64 lb. Mal.
The information I keep locating makes refrence to the high protein level effecting the kidneys but does not realy discuss apropriate protein levels for a working dog's general diet. Any thoughts??
I would also like to add a couple of questions because I "thought" I might be dealing with Pano last week when my pup came up limping a couple of weeks ago. I have read on this site that the protein levels should be kept to around 24% in order to either releive the symptoms of Pano or to possibly keep it from occuring all together. Many people on this board feed RAW from puppyhood and beyond and I was wondering what would the protein levels be on a 100% RAW diet? I have never heard of anyone complaining about their pups having a problem with Pano while being fed what I would think is an extremely high protein diet. At least higher than an adult kibble. Can someone explain this too me? Can a pup or dog have too much Protein and if so could you site an example along with the problems this might create? I might be in the minority but I do not have blood panels done on my dogs.
