..........I like learning this stuff, and didn't know beef protein was less efficient. Since this is the first time I've fed RAW to a dog, I have a lot to learn. Hope he doesn't suffer along the way. Oh, and I'll eliminate the C for now and add it back in slowly. Is a week enough time to eliminate it?.... Another question, how do I know he's getting enough calcium for his growing bones? That's a concern I forgot to mention.
Poultry and some kinds of fish are more "efficient" in that they deliver more protein per calorie than beef.
A few days of no C will tell you.
OK, calcium. Dogs get their calcium from bones. If you are feeding RMBs, that's the calcium source.
I do *not* supplement calcium. I know it's not universal. To me, the calcium-phosphorous ratio (basically, bone-to-meat ratio) is vital; it's the basis of the diet.
It's true puppies are growing their bones; but they are also growing their muscle and organs. They need more meat-plus-bones, period, just as they would if their parents were feeding them in a den.
I'm feeding RMB's - chicken wings, turkey necks, and soon chicken backs. It's a little hard to figure if I'm getting the meat to bone ratio correct but I think so. I usually feed ground chicken, etc which includes ground bone and organs in the AM, a couple of chicken wings or a turkey neck for lunch, then ground chicken, etc in the PM. I too would be leary to give a calcium supplement if he's getting enough from the bones, as I believe excess calcium could bring on a host of unwanted problems.
Thanks so much for the advice, everyone! I'm sure hoping this diarrhea thing will stop soon, I'm running out of backyard space to play with the pup. Even though I pick it up of course, it's not easy to get it all.
We all seemed to have missed your green tripe question. I do not feed it because I don't have a local source to get it, plus I understand it is very expensive. However, I think tripe equals or takes the place of organ meat, so if you feed liver or kidneys, I would not feed tripe and vice versa. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
